The second recording session was focused around adding a layer of guitar over the top of the drums and bass, and once those were done I was going to add some vocals as well from one of the two singers. They had their own cab and head brought in that they wanted to use, so I set up a DI and three microphones at different possessions.

  • The first microphone was set up close against the grill, slightly off centre almost between the edge and the centre of the speaker.

  • The second mic was set 3 feet backwards pointing at the second speaker aiming around the same location as the first microphone. Between the centre and the edge of the speaker.

  • The last microphone was put behind the cab, to see what it would capture. I was hoping to capture more low-end so that I could treat the low end slightly different.

  • The last was not a microphone, but a DI purely for the clean aspect of it so that I could bring in any frequencies I was missing from the microphones.

Overall the recording session went really well with the guitar, there were a few retakes and the guitar solo on English Rose took a few takes to get the right sound and tone from it. I am going to have to look at melding some of the different tracks together to find out which one works out best, as some had good starts but bad endings, and some did the opposite having a good ending but the starting was out of time or off with pitch.

Pitch and timings can be slightly adjusted, but I prefer to do as little of that as possible to keep the track as close to the raw recording as I can. This is only the first out of two guitars, and may need to have some sessions again in the future to finish it all off as time was short today.
